Whangarei Heads - our natural playground
Whangarei Heads is known as a nature lovers paradise. An abundance of walking and hiking trails as well as sheltered coves and stunning white sand ocean beaches can be found throughout this peninsula. Mount Manaia towers 460 metres above the harbour entrance – its dramatic rock peaks are steeped in Maori legend. A one hour climb through beautiful native bush is rewarded with spectacular coastal and harbour views. This track is rated amongst the top 14 short walks in New Zealand.
At the end of the ‘Where Giants Gather' scenic route lies Bream Head Scenic reserve and the stunning 6 kms of white sandy Ocean Beach. After the tranquillity of the sheltered inner harbour coves, Ocean Beach has a raw energy with its often powerful surf and awesome views. This surf beach is patrolled by surf lifesaving teams throughout the summer period. Fantastic place for surfing, body boarding, sandcastle building or just to kick back and enjoy the laid back pace of Whangarei Heads.

Enjoy a scenic journey from the Whangarei Town Basin to the end of the Whangarei Heads peninsula. Journey through a grand landscape where giants surround you. Giants of geology, nature and history are gathered here, like the majestic creatures that inspired the name: Whangarei-te-rerenga-paraoa (the gathering place of whales).
